She said that the project was funded by the European Union, adding that the organization was targeting some forty-five schools which would be made disabled-friendly as a way of making them easily accessible by disabled persons.
She added: “disabled people who are trying to gain access to education have been finding it very difficult and we are going to be working with three hundred and fifty children in the country.”
Chairman National Commission for Persons with Disability, Frederick Kamara, referred to the project as a stepping stone towards empowering persons with disability in the country, adding that it would be a step in the right direction to building the capacity of disabled people.
Mr. Kamara further stated that the project would ensure that children, who were blind, would be able to make their ways to the classrooms and that learning materials would be provided, adding that it was a good project. “The Honourable Minister of Education mentioned that three years ago all new institutions of learning in the country will be disabled-friendly and I believe he will keep his word,” he said.
Director of education, Alhaji Mohamed Kamara, stated that the project was in line with the ministry’s plans to achieve the sustainable development goal four, noting that no one would be left behind in the education sector of the country.
Chairman, Bombali District Coalition for Disability, Alex Sesay, thanked Sightsavers for the support provided for disabled people in that part of the country, adding that they hoped that the support by the organization would not only stop at the pilot stage.
