The National Returning Officer (NRO) at the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (EC-SL), Mohamed Kenewui Konneh has announced partial results on the conduct of the June 24, 2023 presidential election.
The incumbent, Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), secured 1,067,666 votes, whiles the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) Party got 793,751 votes. Other political parties that contested the election got: “NDA – 14,829, PDP – 4,136, CDP – 1,663, UNPP – 2,865, ADP – 394, PLP – 5,149, PDMC – 9,621, RUFP – 4,780, UDP – 199 and ReNIP – 1,807.”
These results represent 60 percent of total polling stations results processed in each district, cleared by the EC-SL Result Management Systems at Regional Tally Centres in Freetown, Bo, Kenema, Makeni and Port Loko.
The NRO said: “By the powers conferred on me as the National Returning Officer, I hereby release partial presidential election results for presidential election conducted on 24th June, 2023”.
He emphasised that the results are partial and do not represent the complete outcome of the presidential election, adding that final certified results will be announced within the next 48 hours.
The EC-SL is the only Constitutionally-mandated authority, responsible to announce election results in exercise of the powers conferred on it by Section 33 and 38A (as amended) of the Constitution of Sierra Leone, 1991 (Act No. 6 of 1991) and pursuant to Sections 7 and 68 (1) of the Public Elections Act, 2022 (Act No.17 of 2022), the EC-SL conducted the Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Council Elections simultaneously in Sierra Leone on 24 of June 2023.
The EC-SL has assured that it remains committed to producing accurate results that reflect the will of Sierra Leoneans, as expressed on the ballot papers they so diligently cast, on election day.
Sierra Leoneans have been eagerly awaiting the results of the presidential election. The election featured a total of 13 candidates, including the incumbent president, Julius Maada Bio, who was seeking a second term in office.
