“The aim is to increase enrolment and retention in schools, improve nutritional status of children; thus supporting food security measures in the country”, said Jestina Conteh, WFP Officer-in-charge (OIC) Eastern Region.
The Officer-in-Charge (OIC), World Food Programme (WFP) Eastern Region; the Deputy Minister of Education together with the Director of School Feeding participated in the joint government – WFP study mission to Brazil which used to be WFP’s beneficiary programme, to learn about the experiences and good practices of schools in Brazil engaged in feeding programme. Brazil runs one the largest school feeding programme in the world.
Giving his statement during the launch of the National School Feeding Program at Bandajuma Sowa Chiefdom in the Pujehun District, the Director of the National School Feeding programme Sylvester Meheux said school feeding contributes towards development of cognitive, psychomotor and affective domains of learning. He added that it also reduces short term hunger and causes children to live longer.
The Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development commended the WFP and partners for championing the school feeding programme in the country.
