Meanwhile, citizens in Freetown have raised concerns over the traffic lights that have not been functional for more than two-weeks. The traffic lights were a pilot phase initiated by the former President Koroma’s government to ease traffic tensions in the country, especially in the capital Freetown.
However, news doing the rounds is that the company that was contracted to install the traffic lights is threatening to sue the government of Sierra Leone for failing to make the outstanding payment for the pilot phase.
Many lives have probably been saved by these traffic lights that were installed and they were installed to also save lives of pedestrians and cyclists.
Speaking to AYV, some citizens urged the government to ensure that the traffic lights start functioning once again.
They added that school going children find it difficult to cross the streets during and after school hours as a result of no working traffic lights in addition to non-presence of police officers to control traffic.
Deputy Minister of Information and Communication Mamadi Gobeh-Kamara speaking on the issue of the non-working traffic lights said the government is aware and waiting on the court notice and that the matter is with the Anti-Corruption Commission for further investigation.
She added that the ACC is looking into the matter regarding the contract because it contained lots of issues and that when they conclude their investigation the traffic lights project will continue.
