It can be recalled that the former military chief was kidnapped over the weekend in Nigeria and the kidnappers, allegedly Boko Haram operatives, are demanding a huge ransom of millions of dollars for his release.
According to sources, serious tension and panic is on the wake among government officials causing some of them to start dodging official international diplomatic trips, especially trips to Nigeria.
Sources say not only with government officials within the country but also with those working out of the country in Embassies and Consulates in Nigeria and other countries like Iraq; where the country’s former young minister of youth affairs, Alimamy Koroma is now serving as Ambassador.
Sources say some government officials from various Ministries, Departments and Agencies, including Cabinet ministers and state officials who were scheduled to fly out of the country on official trips to Nigeria unceremoniously canceled the trips.
It is no secret that the news about the kidnapping of Ex-Brigadier General Nelson-Williams has caused mixed feelings among Sierra Leoneans at home and abroad, with most people wondering how the Sierra Leone government will rescue the poor man from the hands of those Nigerian hooligans.
Many people are saying only God’s intervention will save the poor man as according to them Sierra Leone governments are very much notable for neglecting their people in time of need.
They recalled that quite recently, about 5,000 Sierra Leoneans were evicted from houses they built with their own money in Ghana on the grounds that the Ghanaian government claimed that the piece of land where the houses are built is a state property.
They said when the suffering country men and women cried for help from the Government of Sierra Leone, no help was received and eventually they were rendered homeless.
The incident of the Sierra Leone students in Venezuela was another issue brought forward by many other people. According to them, the students were neglected for years without any help from their government as the Venezuelan government prohibits foreign students from getting jobs in the country.
The issue of the Kuwait maid saga; in which over a thousand Sierra Leonean women are languishing in Kuwait as slaves to their employers was also raised by many people. They said the maids were calling on the Sierra Leone government for help but their cries were ignored and to date, those women are still languishing in Kuwait as slaves.
However, the “Bringbackourambassador” campaign still continues to gaining momentum on social media with millions of people signing up to boost the campaign.
Also, several places of worships including Mosque ad Churches across the country and the world over are assiduously praying for God’s intervention to save the deputy ambassador’s life from the hands of those Nigerian hoodlums.
