Drivers had to abandon their vehicles and flee for their lives, as the heavy and fast moving floods carried several cars and light vans several miles down the road – many were this morning found stuck in huge gutters.
Some of the worst affected areas are Crab Town by Ascension Town, Kroo Town Road,and Congo Town. Residents in worst affected communities were evacuated, after climbing rooftops for safety.
The previous Saturday inundation has added huge strain to the recovery efforts which started two weeks ago, after the destruction and loss of hundreds of lives, caused by landslides on the 14th of August 2017. Over 500 were confirmed dead and hundreds more unaccounted for, with 600 homeless.
Owing to that the head of the Office of National Security, Ishmael Tarawalie has on Sunday 27 August 2017, consoled flood victims at Point and Dundas streets in Freetown.
During his visit, he expressed profound condolence to the relatives of an eight months old baby who was swept away by torrential rains on Saturday 26 August 2017.
Ishmael Tarawalie further presented relief items to the victims and assured them that his office is working assiduously in ensuring that they were registered and commended youths in the area for saving many residents, who should have lost their precious lives and properties in the flood.
The flood also affected many residents residing along the Samba gutter that runs from Sorrie town down to Kroobay community, including a student called David who was also lost his live by the floods.
Many residents at Kroobay were seriously affected by the heavy down pour of rain, including two people who were killed and properties worth million of leones destroyed.
The eight months old baby remains was later found at Robert street in the central part of Freetown capital, wrapped in baby ‘jumper’ before the disaster response team arrived at the scene and transferred the corpse to Connaught hospital mortuary on Lightfoot Boston street.
Fleet of cars were also swept into Samba gutter by the Saturday 27 August 2017, torrential rains that left many residents leaving along the Samba gutter homeless and downtrodden.
The Mayor of Freetown, Franklyn Bode Gibson and some government officials visited the victims , before consoling them to be patient as government is doing every possible things to have them registered and transferred to a safe settlement.
