AYV spoke to some pregnant women and lactating mothers. They maintained that the government is fully aware of their problem and that they have been talking for so long but no headway to the issues they raise.
According to them, getting access to a health facility is a grave challenge especially for children and pregnant women in need of urgent medical attention. They added that it is also a challenge for teenage girls who have to travel off the community to attend secondary schools.
In many areas, access to education and health facilities is still a challenge specifically for children, pregnant women, lactating mothers and young girls. The community members of the Bottom Oku Crab Town community in Wellington have commended the free quality education and free medical in the country but complain of not benefiting from the initiatives.
Mohamed Kanu is a community stakeholder who said the problems are seriously disturbing the locality as they are deprived of most of the basic amenities and that even when pregnant women and other people need urgent medical attention, it is very difficult as the health center is not close to the community. He added that even when thieves and criminals break into houses they have nowhere to complain the matter because there is no police post in the community
A community member Agnes Bockarie said the distance of secondary schools from the community has contributed to a number of teenage pregnancies in the community. He continued that there is only one primary school in the community which is disturbing the teenage girls as their parent are unable to properly monitor their activities off the community
