Danger!! As more and more heavy rains set to fall; Another Mudslide Threat

It can be recalled that in the early hours of Monday, August 14 2017, residents woke up to one of the most powerful rainstorms ever seen. Water cascaded down the steep slope of Sugarloaf Mountain, a precipitous peak on the edge of Freetown.

The mudslide occurred after three days of torrential rain and the mudslide and rain overwhelmed Freetown’s drainage system, creating waterways that churned down steep streets across the capital.

Mudslides overran several houses killing hundreds of residents, many of whom were trapped inside their homes.

Back then, many questioned why the government failed to tackle the illegal construction of the overcrowded hillsides. 

Despite several warnings from the country’s officials against unregulated constructions on the hillsides, people are still violating this warnings and are putting their lives at risk.

The need for government through its relevant structures to correct this ugly development now has been a clarion call from all Sierra Leoneans and friends of Sierra Leone.
