The ECOWAS Commission has applauded the Sierra Leone Police for peacefully securing the June 2023 elections in Sierra Leone.
The June 24 election, no doubt, was described as one of the most peaceful elections in the country.
Ambassador Abdel Fatau Musah of the Commissioner for Political Affairs for Peace and Security in the ECOWAS Commission, requested the Inspector General of the Sierra Leone Police, William Fayia Sellu, to designate the SLP’s focal officer in charge of Elections Security Management, to participate in an experience sharing and capacity building workshop, to enhance the role of Police in an Electoral Security and Participatory Democracy in Liberia.
On the basis of that request, the IGP appointed Chief Superintendent of Police, Augustine Kamara and Head of SLP Electoral Security Management to represent the organisation.
CSP Augustine Kamara departed the shores of Sierra Leone for Liberia on 12th September, 2023, as the workshop commenced on 13th and ended on 16th September, 2023.
As part of the engagements of the workshop, Mr. Kamara was tasked to deliver lectures on the following thematic areas, which he successfully achieved. Areas he handled included: “Standard Guidelines on Elections Security Management Planning. Needs Assessment/Threat Assessments. Electoral Security Coordination. Gap Assessment and Deployment of Security Personnel. Post Elections Security. Inclusive developing a work plan for the three phases of elections: Before, during and After the Electioneering Processes”.
Participants were drawn from the various security sectors in Liberia, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), Media and Peace Actors.
One of the members of the security sector in Liberia, Brigadier General Foyor, appreciated the SLP for the experience sharing session and described it as a learning curve for them in Liberia.
However Ambassador Abdel Fatau Musah extended thanks and appreciation to the IGP, William Fayia Sellu for honouring their request for a member of the SLP to participate in the workshop.
