Alhaji Kanja Sesay further stated that EDSA is a decentralized outfit which has a presence in every part of the country, citing that the electricity being supplied in the country is not reflecting on the amount of money that the government is receiving by way of the tariff people pay.
He added that what henceforth, EDSA shall be ensuring that people are legally connected to the grid and are paying the correct amount of tariff they consume, adding that, during their findings they observed that people have direct connection to electric poles and no meters.
The mandate of EDSA since its inception in the country is not necessarily a profit-making entity but is responsible to provide electrification services for the country as promised by President Julius Maada Bio.
According to Alhaji Kanja Sesay they are trying to fix the correct tariff system for EDSA customers and that they will not only be finding out but will also be taking legal action against people that are illegally connected to the grid.
“We have what we call in the tariff structure five tier system; you have tier one which is domestic and is charged between 0 and 50 kilowatt hours; then you have 560 Leones per kilo watt hours, for which you pay about Le1,215. Tier two is for commercial and business houses and their tariff is different,” he said.
“It is true that there are not adequate meters and this meter issue is a challenge; and because EDSA does not get the amount of money it is supposed to be getting out of the electricity it supplies, EDSA is facing challenge in buying meter in a timely manner,” he said.
He further said that when he came into office, they decided to have a private sector player instead of EDSA paying for and installing meters, with a possibility of having a private company to import meters they would sell to the country.
