EPA Director, Momodu Bah said the seaweed has been affecting the livelihood of many Sierra Leoneans especially fishermen and women. He pointed out that the tourism sector also has been profoundly affected and that the entire shores of Sierra Leone has constantly been flooded by Sargassum Seaweed, he mentioned that the flooding of seaweed has been constant in the raining season period since its inception 2011.
“This is not a mere exaggeration but the impact of the reoccurrence of seaweed on the tourism sector and the livelihood of considerable number of Sierra Leoneans has a cascading effect in our society”
He stated that the development of national strategy plan could be a way of meeting with regional strategy plan in tackling the issue of seaweed and other alien and invasive species.
Renewable Energy, Science and Technology Adviser, Henry Serry mentioned that he is working to transform seaweed into a useful specimen by converting it into a renewable energy. He called on Sierra Leoneans to come forward with any project in mind to make seaweed useful.
