The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) Complaint, Discipline, and Internal Investigations Department (CDIID) has taken decisive action by issuing demotions to four officers for negligence.
This decision, made on January 24, 2024, highlights the commitment of the SLP to uphold accountability and integrity within its ranks.
The demotions were handed down to key personnel, including the Local Unit Commander of Kailahun, ACP Mohamed Morie Kamara (OC Blama), ASP Josiah Nicol, and Inspector Ansumana.
Their failure to address a rape case in Kenema city led to severe repercussions, including threats and violence against a newspaper publisher who had reported the crime.
The publisher, seeking safety in Freetown, lodged a complaint with the CDIID, prompting a thorough investigation. Following due process, a Disciplinary Committee was convened, where the officers initially pleaded not guilty. However, as witnesses testified and evidence was presented, the officers were found guilty on all counts.
As a result of their negligence, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Morie Kamara was demoted to Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent of Police Josiah Nicol to Inspector and Inspector Ansumana to Sub-Inspector.
This decision has been widely commended by the public, underscoring the importance of maintaining discipline and restoring public trust in law enforcement.
