‘Fake USA passenger’ granted 50 million bail

According to the particulars of the offence, the accused Abdulai Koroma uttered a certain document to wit the United State of America Permanent Resident card and further attempting to travel from Sierra Leone to the United State of America via Freetown International Airport.

This press further learnt that, the accused was arrested on 10 February 2016 at the Freetown International Airport in the Kaffu Bollum Chiefdom in Port Loko district, whiles the accused and other passengers were undergoing a routine check by the immigration officers and other security agency officers at the airport.

The accused person, Abdulai Koroma was handed over to the Lungi Police Division for further investigation, but was later transferred to the Criminal Investigations Department on Pademba Road in Freetown where he was interrogated and charged to court in respect of the allegation levied against him by the police.

In his plea of mitigation and bail on behalf of the accused person, lawyer Kenneth Kamara said his Client has appeared before the court on three adjourned dates and the prosecution has not led an iota of evidence since the matter commenced at the Court N0.1 in Freetown.

He told the court that his Client is not a flight risk and will always make himself available to the court on every adjourned date including a reliable and credible surety who is ready and willing to enter into any recognizance on his behalf.

However, the police prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP Samuel Kamara did not object to bail but craved the indulgence of the adjudicating Magistrate to consider the offence for which the accused was charged.

At this stage, the presiding Magistrate, Abubakar Binneh Kamara subscribed to the fact that, since the prosecution has not led a single evidence in the matter and the liberty of the accused person is equally important, he wasted no time to admitting the accused person on bail in the sum of fifty million leones including one surety who should be a residential citizen in Freetown and  a bank statement of at least thirty million  leones or equivalent to one title deed in Freetown and bail to be approve by Master and Registrar of the court.

The matter was adjourned to 29 March 2016.

In another separate development, one of the remand prisoners facing various offences ranging from malicious damage to assault occasioning actual bodily harm contrary the Offences Against the Persons Act of 1864 has escaped in hands of court police officers while he was been led to the court cell for onward transportation to the Male Correctional Centre in the west part of the country’s capital Freetown.

This press gathered that, the police officers who allowed the accused to sneaked his way out of the law court building has been ordered to go in search of the accused person or face serious disciplinary action.
