Giving an overview of the training, HCRSL Director of Complains Investigation and Legal Service, Doris Sonsiama said the training geared toward addressing issues related to the three gender acts; Devolution of Estate Act, Domestic Violence Act and the Registration of Customary Marriages and Divorce Act of 2007, adding that the training happened to be essential, not only for staff and commissioners but also community members as well as the general public.
“Because sometimes we do have the law’s, but because people were utterly unaware about the existence of the country’s laws, as result of this we noticed that there are situations where people’s fundamental and inalienable human rights are being violated, in various communities. People need to be aware and conversant with these laws, in order for them to know and understand their basic human rights; also they will have the aptitude to understand when their rights have been violated and the appropriate way they can seek redress for violation”.
HCRSL Executive Secretary, Joseph Ben Manking Kamara said the training session was essential, as he noted the challenges involves in addressing gender issues. He further stated that the training will capacitated staff as well as commissioner’s, in order for them to be informed and be able to interpret the laws to their target audience, precisely in rural communities with diverse way of life.
Both staff’s and commissioners described the training as timely and a step in the right direction, as they are looking forward to control domestic violence in the country. A participating staff said the training session happened at the right moment, as gender violence was on the increased in the country.
