Commissioner Biobele started investigations into assets of the previous government officials from 2007 to 2018 on Monday 19 November 2019. He shall be probing into the assets of 35 former government officials including ministers and their deputies.
The Commissioner said: “investigation into assets of POIs is not about finances of MDAs and PET forms, Permanent Secretaries or procurement,” adding that “it is about taking into consideration the earnings including salaries and other legitimate emoluments of the POIs and whether properties owed by the POIs is commensurate with the ascertained earnings of the POIs.
Commissioner Biobele noted that Counsel for the State is expected to provide evidence to show the total earnings of the POIs, adding that State Counsel is also expected to release evidences showing that the properties and earnings being investigated actually belong to the POIs under probe such as, real land, vehicles and businesses.
The Judge went on to state the State Counsel is also expected to lead evidence showing the value of each of these properties, noting that the State Counsel will then be expected to show that the total earnings of the POIs in question is not commensurate with the value of the properties owned by the POIs.
