The event which was commemorated with the theme: “Respect for Human Rights as a Prerequisite for a Politically Tolerant and Peaceful Election”, was grace by Network of National Human Rights Institution- West Africa (NNHRIs-WA), ECOWAS representative, European Union (EU) Head of Delegation Sierra Leone, United Nation Resident Coordinator and Musical from the One Family People.
Rev. Dr. Usman Jesse Fornah, Chairman HRCSL in his statement asserted that the international human rights day is observed on 10th December every year in commemoration of the adoption of the universal declaration of the human on the 10th December 1948 by the United Nation General Assembly.
“It is a day that is set aside to celebrate humanity; a day we should remember that we are born free and equal with rights and dignity” he said.
This year’s human rights day according to the Chairman is dedicated to the launch of one year campaign of the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Right as Sierra Leone is matching towards the defining moment of it political history by conducting election March 7th 2018.
Sunil Saigal UN Resident Coordinator in his statement noted that human rights day is cause to marking the anniversary of entering into the force in 1948 of the universal declaration of the international human rights.
The declaration according to the Resident Coordinator articulated system of values based on respect for the dignity of a person and the improvement of all their foundation right and freedom.
