In Makeni…ONS on Elections Security Talks

Alphous Kamara, the ONS Security Coordinator – North, said they organised the session to assess the likely threats to be encountered in polling day, during ballot counting and the aftermath of the election, with recommendations proffered,.

The previous General and by-elections across the country were used as case studies.

Mr Kamara furthered that they will strongly follow the ideas developed by the participant.

Among other issues highlighted during the session is that political parties have a lot to do in especially training their party agents, on how to observe elections as most of them are ignorant of their roles and responsibilities during the polling day, which most time leads to delay of arguments and delays in the counting of ballots.

In his remarks, the Assistance Inspector General Of Police-North, Amos Kargbo lauded ONS for the round table discussion on security issues in the district.

‘Our obligation as police officers is to protect lives and properties of the state’, the AIG said, assuring all of a peaceful election, as the police, he said, will manage the process well.

He advised political parties to admonish their supporters to be peaceful and respect the law.

Peter Conteh, a civil society activist, commended ONS for the session and called on them to put to good use the recommendations given by the participant.

‘These elections, if not properly managed by the relevant authorities, will be problematic’, he stated.
