Share

According to the particulars of the offence, the accused was charged to court for threatening to murder the aforementioned minister and also defamed her character, contrary to the laws of Sierra Leone.

Although Dr. Blyden was conspicuously absent in court when the matter was mentioned, but that did not restrained the lead Counsel for the accused, Francis Ben Kaifala from applying for bail on behalf of his client.

He pleaded with the bench to admit his Client on bail, on the legal grounds that his client is a patriotic Sierra Leonean and an ordinary resident within the Freetown judicial district, and also a staff of the Legal Aid Board.

Lawyer Francis Kaifala canvassed the Bench that the accused person is Paralegal and never had any criminal record, adding that his client would not interfere with prosecution witness or witnesses and would always be available in court on every adjourned date.

The prosecuting team headed by Superintendent Samuel Kamara however, objected to the notion of granting bail to the accused person, on the grounds that accused is charged with very serious offences and considering the fact that he threatened to kill Dr. Sylvia Blyden who is a public servant.

He said if the accused person is granted bail, there is the likelihood that he might jump bail; tamper with prosecution witness or witnesses, more so when the complainant in the matter is an esteem personality and a top government official.

After assessing and digesting the submissions of both Counsels for the complainant and accused, Magistrate Dr. Abubakar Binneh Kamara admitted accused on bail in the sum of fifty million leones, including two sureties in like sum.

According to the conditions stated in bail bond, the accused should produce two sureties who should be residential citizens in the Western Area of Freetown and bail to be approved by the Deputy Assistant Master and Registrar of the Court.

Before adjourning the matter to Friday 3 February 2017, Magistrate Binneh Kamara admonished the lead prosecutor, Superintendent Samuel Kamara to do everything humanly possible in ensuring that complainant; Dr. Sylvia Blyden present in court on next adjourned date.

He concluded that if there is substantive evidence and the court deems it fit for the matter to be committed to the high court for further trial, he would do so, but again he would discharge the accused person if the court finds nothing against him.
