Sierra Leone’s National Electoral Commission (NEC) has denied any plans to postpone the country’s general elections from 2023 to 2024 as widely rumored lately.
Speaking to newsmen on Radio Democracy, NEC’s Chief Electoral Commissioner, Mohamed Kenewui Konneh said the country’s Electoral Act says national elections must be held every 5 years. This, according to the NEC chief is what the Commission is going to work with.
He said the Commission has done its strategic plans for the next elections which they will soon launch for public consumption.
It can be recalled that just after having a fruitful and successful one-on-one engagement with several stakeholders in Freetown on election issues, the NEC Chairman wasted no time in undertaking a needs assessment mission in the North, South and East of the country, especially in hard to reach areas.
Mr. Konneh, who was in the company of senior officials from his Commission and the Ministry of Works and Public Assets, visited all three regions where they inspected and assessed sustainable sites for future electoral offices in some districts in the country as part of preparation for the 2023 elections.
In a bid to further be on the right track to conduct future elections in Sierra Leone, Mr. Konneh has engaged NEC staff in the regions to assess their needs as well as the requirements needed from them for future elections.
