New Direction Gets $15M for Bunumbu Teachers College Rebirth

The Government of Sierra Leone through the Tertiary Education Ministry has secured $15 Million dollars fund for the Reconstruction and Rehabilitation of Bunumbu Teachers College (BTC) in Bunumbu town, Eastern region, Peje-west chiefdom in the Kailahun district.

Bunumbu Teachers college is one of the oldest college in the Eastern region which was first established as a Union college in 1992. Bunumbu Teachers college was displayed by the Rebel in the 1991, the whole college structure was destroyed and forced students to flee out of Kailahun district and moved to the urban area for tertiary education programmes.

It was later the Bunumbu Teachers college and the Kenema Technical Institute was merged by the Late President Dr. Tejan Kabba Government through the Minister of Education by then Dr. Alpha Wurie to established Eastern Polytechnic under three (3) Campuses which is the Kenema Technical Institute Campus, the Bunumbu Teachers college Campus in Kailahun district and the Waoma College Campus in in Koidu Kono district.

Since then so many attempts were made by stakeholders of Kailahun district to the former government of the APC to relocate and reconstruct the Bunumbu Teachers college to its former structure but to no avail, until when the SLPP took over governance in 2018 that they started the financial lobbying process from donor partners to secure fund for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the Bunumbu Teachers college in the Eastern region of Kailahun Peje-west chiefdom.

Under the leadership of President Julius Maada Bio, the New Direction government with full support from ESS Project and development partners have secured $15Million dollars fund for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the old Bunumbu Teachers college into modernised college standard that will serve the Eastern region more especially Kailahun district.

On Thursday 12th August 2021, the New Direction government made an on spot visits to the old dilapidated Bunumbu Teachers college campus to get an insight of the structures, which have urged the New Direction government to have contracted a consulting firm to embarked on modernize architectural design of the entire Bunumbu Teachers college for reconstruction and rehabilitation of a New Campus.

Stakeholders of the district and the current Principal, Eastern Polytechnic college commended the New Direction Government more especially the TOK AND DO President Bio for his tremendous efforts in securing funds for the Reconstruction and rehabilitation of Bunumbu Teachers college in Peje-west chiefdom Kailahun district.

They stressed that this is their own community project and they should take good care of the project and also make use of the opportunity, hence the project kick-starts it will create short and long terms employment facilities for indigenes of the district to further participated in the reconstruction and rehabilitation process.

It can be recalled that on January 29th 2019, President Julius Maada Bio paid working visit to the Bunumbu Teachers college and assured the people of Kailahun district that the New Direction will soon start the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the Bunumbu Teachers college, as part of his infrastructure development in the education sector in his manifesto.
