Ramatu Kanu is Chairperson of the event and in welcoming participants at the training, she said she wanted the training to be that of an interactive session where girls will share their views on how they approach their menstrual period.
She furthered that she was happy for the initiative by Marion and the Hawa Trust Fund to engage school going pupils on how to approach their menstrual period for the first time.
She encouraged participants to listen keenly during the training session as it will be beneficial to them.
Lead Facilitator, Marion Tee Koroma, former Miss Sierra Leone and health practitioner welcomed the children from the 20 schools who graced the training. She called on the children to serve as ambassadors after the training and take the message to their respective schools.
During the training, “I have conducted my survey in Bombali district, I realised that over 70% of children between the ages of 10 and 15 years do not know how to take care of themselves when they are in their menstrual period.”
She revealed further that the implications and dangers of children who refuse to take care of themselves will lead to diseases like reproductive and urinary tract infections.
She encouraged the teachers and participants to take the message to their schools on the need to be aware and be conscious of themselves, while explaining further the importance of the world menstrual day.
She also encouraged the male participants who were present at the training to look after their sisters at home and should not laugh at them or stigmatize them whenever they are faced with such period.
She concluded that they will donating sanitary pads to both males and females present at the training. The purpose of giving the male participants is for them to go and give their sisters home and also inculcate the habit of encouraging and supporting their sisters whenever they are faced with such period.
Program Director for the Hawa Trust Foundation, Amb Mohamed Yahya Janneh thanked the speakers and the trainer Marion Tee Koroma for the initiative, He furthered that his organization was happy to have teamed up with Koroma to implement such an activity.
He closed his session by encouraging the pupils to be bold whenever they are in their menstrual period.
The beneficiaries during their contributions thanked the organisers for such a laudable venture.
The training ended up with sanitary pads been shared to the participants from the 20 schools.
