Direct Aid as a humanitarian organisation has several areas of intervention. Difficulties to access quality health services being a major challenge for many people especially the less privileged – the organisation has over the years provided various free health care services to of Sierra Leoneans.
This year, Direct Aid has implemented one of its medical health projects wherein 244 people were provided free hernia and hydroxyl surgeries.
Beneficiaries of this health project came from different parts of the country and various categories of ages and sex were targeted for this week long exercise conducted at the Makeni Government Hospital.
Direct Aid Makeni Center Director – Naguib Mohamed Algebawi said, as a humanitarian organisation it provides various services including health to everyone irrespective of gender, race, colour or religion and that’s why there was a change of name from Africa Muslims Agency to the current Direct Aid. He went on to assure all that, on the 7th July the organisation will roll out another health program on cataract operation wherein 500 infected people will be targeted across Sierra Leone.
From the medical team, Mecical Superintendent of Makeni Government Hospital Dr. Sesay confirmed that, all the 244 surgeries were successful. While thanking the donor for its foresight to provide free medical services to deprived Sierra Leoneans, he gave a rundown of cases relating to hernia that, it’s a common disease that affect lots of people especially those in rural communities.
With the intervention of Direct Aid, the Medical Superintendent is optimistic that, the rate of this disease would soon be recorded at a very low rate in the country.
For the 244 beneficiaries, the free health care mission by Direct Aid is a sigh of relief- as they couldn’t afford the cost for surgery. They extend appreciation to the funding agencies as well as individuals who contributed relentlessly to restore their normal health.
