As the leadership is not unmindful of the need to improve on its human resource capacity, the Government of Sierra Leone through the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Francis Alieu Munu, recently advertised for recruitment into the Organization. Thousands of Civilians nationwide opted to gain admission. However, criteria were set to target the best among the rest. In view of the above, a good number of applicants produced genuine results, save for few who decided to take chance and negotiate the system. Perhaps, they thought that the appropriate systems were not in place to verify the academic credentials of applicants.
Since the Management was not unconscious of the fact that some applicants might intend to take chance, a team of committed and dedicated personnel were charged with the responsibility to verify the results and monitor the process. Resultant to that development, eight persons were found wanting for submitting fraudulent results, namely: Isatu Sesay, Alie Koroma, Eustace Sankoh, Foday Karim, Alpha Mohamed Kargbo, Adama Kargbo, Olunjudeh Matthew, and Mariama Mansaray. The said Fraudsters were investigated and subsequently charged to court with one count charge of; Attempting to obtain admission into the Sierra Leone Police by Fraudulent means, contrary to Section 42 of the Police Act No.7 of 1964.
All accused persons pleaded guilty on their first appearance on Tuesday 23rd May, 2017. On their second appearance for record and sentence on Friday 26th May, this year, the no nonsense Magistrate Dr. Abu Bakarr Binneh Kamara fined each one of them with the sum of Three hundred thousand Leones or an alternative of 3 Months imprisonment.
The process towards the admission of applicants is still in progress as the successful applicants would have to go for Medical check, Criminal records check, and Interview respectively before meeting the threshold. Beyond the obvious, the Management is encouraging the citizens to assist in identifying those they suspected to have the potential of becoming “Bad Police Men” Whilst the first batch of 2017 applicants are on the job training in various Police facilities across the country, reports reaching the Media Unit state that the performance and conduct of the trainees are encouraging.
