The organization whose mandate is not only limited to prisons but also covers quarantined homes, hospitals, metal homes and persons under house arrest, among others has in a press conference held, yesterday at the GGEMS hall on John Street, Freetown told journalists that a good percentage of quarantined homes nationwide lack adequate food supply.
According the Director of Prison Watch Sierra Leone, Mambu S. Feika, his organization, as part of its mandate has visited a total of 94 quarantined homes across the country donating food items and cash of Le315,000 per household.
During these visits, the Director said they discovered that there were no police presence in some of the homes, the inadequate food supplied to some homes were reportedly not good for human consumption; some households supplied with two tin sardines for 21 days, pregnant and lactating mothers and children going without food; no health checks; people feeding from remnants; among other issues of grave concern.
The organization, he said also discovered that some homes went without food for days while others go through the 21 days quarantine period without a single supply of food.
“Giving the challenges on the ground and should the trend continues as it is, the fight is far from over,” Mr. Feika maintained.
“We demand more sincerity from the government and stakeholders. If we are to contain the Ebola disease, I suggest that all Ministries, like schools, be shot down. Let all government officials go back to their communities and help in the fight,” he urged.
