Sierra Leone-Guinea Border reopens

Share

Authorities from Guinea have formally informed their Sierra Leonean counterparts about the reopening of the border between Sierra Leone and Guinea.

This decision comes after an emergency temporary closure initiated by Guinean authorities on Saturday, November 4, 2023.

On Saturday, a group of unidentified armed individuals stormed a prison in Conakry, successfully liberating a former head of state and two additional inmates.

The city of Conakry was thrown into chaos as heavy gunfire erupted, with armed assailants blocking access to the city center, leaving residents and authorities stunned.

In response to the prison break and the ensuing turmoil, the Guinean Justice Minister, Charles Alphonse Wright, confirmed the closure of the country’s borders. This development prompted the closure of the border with Sierra Leone and other neighboring countries.

As the situation unfolds, a comprehensive search operation has been initiated to apprehend the escaped inmates and those responsible for the audacious prison break.

The reopening of the Sierra Leone-Guinea border marks a crucial step in restoring normalcy in the region after this alarming incident.
