Sierra Leone records 200 Leprosy cases in 2023

Sierra Leone in 2023 recorded two hundred Leprosy cases in various districts and children are also affected. This was according to the Program Manager of the National Leprosy and Tuberculosis Control Program, Dr. Mariama Mahmoud.

She said this was according to research they did in all the districts about Leprosy. She made this disclosure in the launching of Project Activities for Leprosy by the Germany Leprosy Tuberculosis and Relief Association in Family Kingdom.

Chief Medical Officer at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Sartie Kenneh said for the Germany Leprosy Tuberculosis and Relief Association to achieve their goal it should work with the Ministry of Water Resources.

Leprosy is one of the oldest diseases known to humans. Throughout its history leprosy has been a much feared and misunderstood disease. Advances in medicine over the years have turned leprosy into a completely curable disease rendered non-infectious within a short period of starting treatment.

For over a decade, Sierra Leone has been considered free from leprosy disease. However, in a recent statistic by the National Leprosy and Tuberculosis Control Program Sierra Leone has started recording new cases of Leprosy which calls for attention.
