President of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), Ahmed Nasralla aka De Monk has cautioned newsmen to be very professional and ethical in their coverage of the Wellington fire disaster.
“I call on SLAJ members and news outlets to be mindful about the information you put out. We need to be extremely careful to avoid giving the public the wrong information.” De Monk stated.
He expressed disappointment that people are already putting out really horrific images of the Wellington fire disaster on social media.
The journalists’ president used the forum to kindly request newsmen not to share any graphic image as they are not helpful right now for the general public.
De Monk on behalf of SLAJ expressed heartfelt sympathy to victims, families, relatives and friends of the disaster at Wellington and also saluted the vigilant health workers and emergency response personnel.
President Monk said: “I especially appeal to Editors to not only be careful about imagery, but to also not retweet, post or forward such images/videos to avoid increasing social trauma”.
