Sweden drums up support for UN Security Council

Speaking during the meeting at State House today Wednesday June 1, President Koroma assured the Swedish envoy of Sierra Leone’s unflinching support for Sweden’s candidate for the UNSC. He thanked the government and people of Sweden for their support towards the fight against Ebola as well as for the preparation of personnel of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) for peacekeeping missions.

The president described the envoy’s visit as laying a solid foundation for positive engagements and further consolidation of ties between the two countries, adding that both countries share commonalities in many areas. He went on to highlight government’s strides in addressing post-Ebola challenges in health, energy, education and private sector development coupled with keen attention on social protection reforms.

As Chairman of the Committee of 10 Heads of State on the reform of the UNSC, President Koroma informed about efforts being exerted to correct the imbalance and lack of permanent and non- permanent representation of Africa at the UN Security Council. He therefore urged for action to rectify this irregularity in the world’s premier body.

Madam Hjelm Wallén expressed her admiration for strides being made by government to develop and transform the country and commended President Koroma for his tireless efforts in defeating the deadly Ebola disease. She registered her profound delight for her country’s support to Sierra Leone during the fight against Ebola, hoping that bilateral cooperation between the two countries continues to grow from strength to strength.

She said permanent or none permanent representation at the UN Security Council is something that Africa wants to enable the continent have a better say at the UN.
