This further prompted H.E. President Koroma to pay an unannounced visit to some of these beaches to assess the situation for himself. He later called for an investigation to be mounted on the root cause of the weeds attack.
A Senegalese company was contracted to do the investigation and in their report, the company stated that the weeds were caused by too much of nutrients fed into the sea from the land. These nutrients according to the company include waste materials deposited by people on the sea shore that are later drifted into the deep sea by the sea tide. In a visibility tour conducted by this reporter on Saturday 18th June 2016, it was discovered that the quantity of weeds deposited on the beach by the tide, increases on an hourly basis.
At the Lumley Beach Fishing Site (Wan Pole), boat owners and fishermen revealed that it was on the last week of May this year, that the tides started depositing the weeds on the beach.
According to them, the new breed of weeds is larger in size and more stinking than those of the past two years. They complained that this recent ugly development has affected their catches, noting that since the new breeds started depositing itself, most of the species of fish they have been catching have disappeared.
They said whenever a fishing net is been thrown into the sea, it ended up catching quantities of the seaweeds than fish. They used the forum to appeal to Government and stakeholders responsible to act now before the situation gets worsen
