Many people particularly in Freetown believed that the high rate of unemployment is mainly responsible for the increase in crime and therefore want the government to provide job for young people so they will able to take of themselves and their subordinate.
Other field of thoughts believe that , government should also address the problem of overcrowding in Correctional Centres as it has serious effect on inmates that spend long time especially with regard to deterrence and rehabilitation which require serious attention now that the country is experiencing a rise in crime rate.
Moreover, sources gathered show that most young people who are inmates and have been released from the Correctional Centres end up committing the same crime. there are many factors responsible for the increase in crime and Prominent among them is the inability of our society to provide proper education that will move young people forward . But One way or the other, a greater number of the youth in the country are expose to crime, violence, aggressive behaviour.
On the other hand, those established and charge with the responsibility to provide quality education for young people instead engage on something else which is not benefiting them and therefore neglect some of the core values in education as most time teachers pay much attention organizing extra classes at their home for students.
Even though these classes are important as it give teachers more time to finish topics they have started during the normal schooling it is important that students are properly thought before organizing test and also, we must also not forget that the core values like how to be good people in society is also important and therefore Parents/guardians and also teachers must imbibe the culture of educating young people about how to be good spouses and also how to maintain a healthy family life.
Again young people should not forget that they do not have mutual dependence in society and as such they move to from anything that will move them back and thus do what is right. Having stated earlier,, the Correctional Centres in Sierra Leone have great role to play if at all we want to minimize crime rate in the country. In some advance countries, their Prisons are so equipped that it looks like universities where violators of the law are being rehabilitated and come out to serve society in good faith.
Also the officials at the Correctional Centres should tell the public through the print and electronic media about the success of inmates’. In that way, people will know that there is no big difference between those that are “inside” and those “outside.”
