She went on to say that her organization had run non-partisan campaigns for more women as leaders in politics and public lives. “Training of women and young adults nationwide in leadership skills has long been the focus of the 50/50 Group, and they have succeeded in getting more women interested in the electoral process and in governance.” She added. Dr. Taqi furthered that, it was considered imperative to have a permanent base and training institute which would enable them to expand their training capabilities for women in the country.
The 50/50 Group president said that, they had an initial grant of one hundred and twenty five thousand United States dollars from the Africa Women’s Development Fund (AWDF) in Ghana which they used to start the construction of the building in 2010 on a land donated to them by the government of Sierra Leone in appreciation of their good work in the country. She ended by saying that seventeen years back, they had no office on their own but today they were proud of owning a multi-complex building.
In her statement, the founder and first president of the organization Dr. Nemata Majeks-Walker said that, the group was not just opening a building but launching the future of leadership training for Sierra Leonean women. “We are aiming for the next level in the journey towards our vision of 50/50 equality; with women and men working side by side to develop this nation”. She stated.
