A press release from the Audit Service says the 43 auditors who are supported by DFID have already started work which will last for one month, and will target the social security agency (NASSIT), the energy, telecoms and civil works sectors and will cover January 2016 – July 2018.
Sierra Leone’s Deputy Auditor-General in charge of special audits, Tamba Momoh said 11 entities within the four sectors would be audited.
He said that even though the audit service was not subject to the direction of any individual or body in the discharge of its duties, section 119 (7) of the country’s constitution allowed for such request because the law did not “preclude the President, acting in accordance with the advice of cabinet, or Parliament from requesting the Auditor-General in the public interest to audit at any particular time, the accounts of anybody or organization”.
“The audit teams from the Supreme Audit Institutions of Kenya, Tanzania and Ghana comprise staff with specialist skills in civil engineering, telecoms, pensions and investment”, the release says.
It followed a request made by the Auditor-General, Lara Taylor-Pearce to the three countries through the African Organization of English-speaking Supreme Audit Institutions (AFROSAI-E) to assist in the technical audit.
