Minister of Transport and Aviation, Rtd Col. Ambassador Alhaji Fanday Turay, rallied various governmental bodies, including the Freetown City Council, Transport Stakeholders, and ministries, at the Country Lodge Hotel in Hill Station to discuss the Sierra Leone Integrated and Resilient Urban Mobility Project (SLIRUMP).
Minister Fanday Turay expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts and World Bank’s support of SLIRUMP during a working breakfast. The project’s goals, including improving public transportation, enhancing climate resilience, promoting road safety, and strengthening public transport institutions, were underscored.
The Minister reaffirmed his commitment to lead Sierra Leone towards an innovative and sustainable transportation future.
A comprehensive roadmap for urban mobility reform was outlined, including the establishment of the Sierra Leone Public Transport Authority (SLPTA) through an Act of Parliament, the introduction of cashless payment systems, and the launch of predicted bus services. These initiatives reflect the government’s dedication to creating a seamless and efficient urban transport system.
The project is already making progress, with the imminent arrival of 50 buses by the end of November as a significant step towards SLIRUMP’s objectives.
Minister Fanday Turay acknowledged the collective efforts of all stakeholders, highlighting the formation of robust strategies and policies.
With a vision of sustainable mobility, Sierra Leone’s urban transport system is poised for transformation, aiming to enhance citizens’ lives and create a more resilient, connected, and progressive urban environment.
