The Ministry of Energy recognizes that to reach ambitious energy access-goals, integrated approach needs to be pursued thereby creating a structured solution where coordination will deliver energy.
When implemented, the project is estimated to provide energy access for over 8,630 households and businesses with a potential for further replication throughout Sierra Leone.
On his part, Minister of Energy Alhaji Kanja Sesay speaking at the event held at the US Embassy, IMAAT in Freetown said the ministry has prioritized advancing new renewable projects and is increasing the share of renewable in the national energy mix. He said “these efforts are line with our strategic mandate to increase energy to 80 % by 2030, and our medium term objective to raise the share of renewable electricity in the generation mix from 25 to 60% by 2030.”
He used the opportunity to thank the US Trade and Development Agency and the US Embassy for their support and commitment to Sierra Leone. He added that the ministry will not be directly funded under this USTDA Feasibility Study, but will be Grantee to the technical support provided by WindGen. “This will be the first such direct engagement between the Ministry of Energy and USTDA,” Kanja Sesay said.
